When you are in the Fenouilledes, you are in the very heart of Cathar country, as the largest Cathar castles are all within a half hour drive from Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet.

Being on the frontier between Catalonia and Occitania, The Fenouilledes is once again strongly influenced by Cathar history.. Even today there are places where Catalan isn’t spoken because the older folk prefer to speak Occitan (the language of the Cathars or Albigensians) The remains of the Cathar castles are a physical testimony to this heritage.
