Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes

Caudiès Fenouillèdes , situated on the border of the Pyrenees -Orientales and Aude , marks the beginning of " Cathar Country " in the Fenouilledes .

At the foot of the Pic du Bugarach and the river Boulzane valley, the village developed in the middle ages. The castle, Castel Fizel , was under the jurisdiction of the Viscounts of Fenouillet . Under royal control, since the Treaty of Corbeil in 1258 (when the Fenouilledes was annexed to France). Caudiès de Fenouillèdes became a royal city, until the French revolution and was the capital of Viguerie Fenouillèdes (jurisdiction of a magistrate or provost) . It was the meeting place in August 6, 1789 for the first Federation of France.

You become aware of the villages rich heritage when you walk the old streets of the village and discover the half-timbered houses near the gates of the old fort that continue to the fifteenth century chapel of Notre Dame de Laval and the irrigation channels.

Around the Col de Saint- Louis, there are many hiking and climbing sites.

Today there is a leisure centre with hostel accommodation and a camping site at Castel Fizel, where you can ride horses, go mountain biking or enjoy water sports.
